paperback   (Pappband)
cardboard a cloth spine (Kartonband)   hard cover, usually with a cloth spine (Kartonband)
cloth (Leinen / Ganzleinen)   whole cloth binding, (Leinen / Ganzleinen)
leather (Leder / Ganzleder)   whole leather binding (Leder / Ganzleder)
vellum (Pergamet)    whole parchment binding (Pergamet)
half-leather   spine and corner-covers in leather, covers made of cardboard or cloth (Halbleder)
half-cloth   spine and corner-covers in cloth, covers usually made out of cardboard (Halbleinen)
half-vellum   (Halbpergament)
dust-jacket   original publisher's jacket


SIZE

Book-sizes are being characterised by their height:

12mo   duodecimo: height 15 cm or less
8vo   octavo:
   height: 15 - 25 cm, most common size
   small-8°: 15 - 18,5 cm
   8°: 18,5 - 23 cm
   large-8°: 23 - 25 cm
4to   quarto: height: 25 - 35 cm
folio (2°)   height: 35 cm or more
Sizes are also quoted in cm (width x height) within the article descriptions.



CONDITION

The condition-rating, as quoted in the article description, are as accurate as possible but nonetheless, approximate. Specific defects are mentioned within the description text.

as new   modern articles without traces of use
fine   older articles just as new, without being pristine
very good   little traces of wear and age
good   average traces of wear and age
fair   well worn and aged with certain defects
poor   damaged, but still readable; as a rule only rare books are ever offered in this condition
